Itinerary
Tsum Valley adventure begins with an early morning drive from Kathmandu to Soti Khola, which takes roughly 8–9 hours. The scenic journey winds through the lush valleys and terraced fields of Dhunche and along the Trishuli River, offering your first taste of Nepal’s natural beauty. You will cross traditional villages, suspension bridges, and pine forests, making the drive both picturesque and culturally rich. Overnight stay in Soti Khola allows you to rest and acclimatize before your trek. Don’t forget to carry some snacks and water, as food stops are limited along the way.
Today, you’ll start your trek following the Budhi Gandaki River. The trail is mostly uphill, passing dense forests, terraced fields, and small settlements. Arrive at Machha Khola, a peaceful riverside village, where you can enjoy the serene surroundings. This section is ideal for warming up your trekking legs and getting used to the mountain trails. Machha Khola also offers simple tea houses where you can enjoy a hearty Nepali meal.
The trek from Machha Khola to Jagat introduces you to traditional Gurung and Tamang villages. The path is a mix of river trails and gradual ascents, with stunning views of waterfalls and terraced farmland. Jagat is a quaint village with suspension bridges and rustic teahouses, offering a glimpse into the local mountain life. Take time to explore the village and interact with friendly locals. Hydrate well, as the trail can be moderately challenging today.
Today, you enter the sacred Tsum Valley, a hidden gem rich in Tibetan culture. The trail climbs gradually, surrounded by dense forests and prayer flags fluttering in the wind. Lokpa serves as the gateway to the valley, providing panoramic views of snow-capped peaks. Enjoy the peaceful atmosphere and immerse yourself in the unique culture of this isolated region. Tea houses here are basic, so packing light snacks is recommended.
From Lokpa, the trek continues deeper into the Tsum Valley, passing mani walls, chortens, and traditional stone houses. The trail offers stunning views of terraced fields and the surrounding Himalayan peaks. Chumling is a small village where you can experience local life and traditional hospitality. Take the afternoon to stroll around and explore hidden monasteries nearby. Keep your camera ready, this area is perfect for capturing cultural snapshots.
The journey to Chhokangparo involves moderate climbs with occasional steep sections. This village is famous for its ancient Tibetan Buddhist monasteries and rustic charm. The air is crisp, and the scenery of pine and rhododendron forests is breathtaking. Spending time in Chhokangparo offers insight into centuries-old Tibetan Buddhist practices. Evenings are peaceful here, perfect for stargazing and quiet reflection.
Trek from Chhokangparo to Nile, a serene riverside village surrounded by lush forests. The path includes gentle descents and river crossings, providing a mix of trekking experiences. Nile is known for its tranquil setting and traditional village architecture. Take time to relax and prepare for tomorrow’s acclimatisation hike. Don’t miss trying local Tibetan bread at the tea houses.
Today is an acclimatisation day with a rewarding visit to Mu Gompa, an ancient monastery perched on a hilltop. The hike offers panoramic views of the Tsum Valley and surrounding Himalayan peaks. After exploring the gompa, return to Nile for overnight rest. This day helps your body adjust to higher altitudes, preparing you for more challenging sections ahead. Take it slow and enjoy the serene landscapes.
You retrace part of your journey back to Chumling, enjoying familiar trails and vistas from a new perspective. This section is easier, allowing you to appreciate the valley’s hidden corners. The local hospitality in Chumling makes it an enjoyable stop for lunch and rest. Take photos of traditional houses and vibrant prayer flags fluttering in the mountain breeze. Evening strolls in the village provide a peaceful experience.
The trail to Deng involves gradual ascents along the Budhi Gandaki River. You will pass small villages, ancient mani walls, and wooden suspension bridges. Deng offers picturesque views of Himalayan peaks and traditional Tibetan-style homes. The area is culturally rich, with monasteries and mani stones along the trail. Stay hydrated and enjoy fresh local meals at tea houses.
From Deng, the trail ascends gradually into alpine terrain, giving panoramic views of Ganesh Himal and other nearby peaks. Namrung is a charming village known for its vibrant Tibetan culture and serene environment. The trek offers encounters with locals and a chance to see traditional farming practices. Tea houses in Namrung provide warm meals and a cosy place to rest. Take time to enjoy the sunset over the Himalayan peaks.
Today, you trek from Namrung to Samagaon, a larger village that serves as a base for nearby high-altitude treks. The landscape transitions to more rugged, rocky terrain with stunning mountain views. Samagaon has basic lodges and teahouses, making it a comfortable stop. Explore Rachen Gompa, a historic monastery, and enjoy the local Tibetan-style architecture. This village provides an excellent glimpse into the remote Himalayan lifestyle.
The trek to Samdo takes you higher into the alpine zone with breathtaking views of Manaslu and the surrounding peaks. Samdo is a small Tibetan village with traditional stone houses and a unique cultural vibe. This area marks the beginning of more challenging high-altitude treks. Take it slow and enjoy short walks around the village to acclimatise. Prepare your gear for the final high passes ahead.
The descent from Samdo to Dharapani is long but scenic, passing terraced fields and pine forests. This section allows your body to recover from higher altitudes gradually. Dharapani is a larger settlement with better facilities and local markets. Enjoy a relaxed evening exploring the village and sampling local cuisine. The trail provides a satisfying end to your Tsum Valley trekking journey.
After breakfast, drive back from Dharapani to Kathmandu, retracing your route through stunning valleys and rivers. The journey takes about 8–9 hours and offers scenic glimpses of rural Nepal. Once in Kathmandu, check into your hotel and enjoy a relaxing evening exploring the city’s vibrant streets. This marks the end of your trekking adventure but leaves lasting memories of the Tsum Valley.
Depending on your flight schedule, you can enjoy a leisurely morning in Kathmandu for last-minute shopping or sightseeing.
