Everest Base Camp via Gokyo Trek is one of the most scenic and adventurous trekking routes in the Everest region. This trek combines the classic Everest Base Camp journey with the stunning Gokyo Lakes area, offering diverse landscapes, high mountain passes, and exceptional Himalayan views.
The trek usually starts with a flight to Lukla followed by trekking through Namche Bazaar. Instead of heading directly toward Everest Base Camp, the trail diverges toward the Gokyo Valley. Here trekkers explore turquoise glacial lakes, the massive Ngozumpa Glacier, and the Gokyo Ri viewpoint, which provides one of the best panoramic views of Everest.
After exploring Gokyo, trekkers cross Cho La Pass, one of the high mountain passes in the region. This section requires good physical fitness and careful acclimatization. Once the pass is crossed, the trail joins the classic Everest Base Camp route.
This combined trek typically takes around 16 to 18 days. It is considered moderately challenging to challenging due to altitude, terrain, and pass crossing.
The major highlights include Gokyo Lakes, Gokyo Ri viewpoint, Everest Base Camp, Kala Patthar sunrise view, Sherpa villages, monasteries, glaciers, and dramatic Himalayan landscapes.
Accommodation consists of tea house lodges providing meals and resting facilities along the route.
The best seasons for this trek are spring and autumn when weather conditions are stable and visibility is excellent.
Everest Base Camp via Gokyo Trek is ideal for experienced trekkers seeking a more adventurous alternative to the standard Everest Base Camp route. It offers quieter trails, diverse scenery, and a comprehensive Himalayan trekking experience.
